How often should you change your makeup brushes?
I was curious to find out how often other people change their makeup brushes. I have been using clinique makeup for several years now but lately I’ve seem to be having some sort of allergic reaction on my skin (mainly cheeks). I don’t believe its the makeup since I never had a problem with it before. I am thinking it might be my makeup brushes (i.e., blush and powder brush). Can these brushes, if not changed often, cause a reaction? For instance, too much buildup on the brush. Thanks.

Instead of changing your brushes, it’s good to clean them with brush cleaner after each use or at least once a week.

I use sephora brush cleaner.

Yes i read in a magazine that if you dont clean your brushes bacteria can build up and cause acne…but that doesnt sound like your case so maybe its something you ate or something?

Good high quality brushes do not need to be replaced entirely for years.

I change mine every 3-6 months. Brushes are a haven for bacteria, and they can spread it into your make- up and contaminate it. Some people just use brush cleaners, but I’d rather not take the chance.

Clean them with baby shampoo once a month. About every 3rd month, use a brush cleanser that will also sanitize (MAC has one, the Sephora one may also do this).

Pour a bit of the cleanser or shampoo in your hand. Swirl the brush around in it for a few moments. Rinse. If it still looks dirty or the water was dirty, then do it again until the water runs clean. Smooth out the bristles and place it on a papertowel overnight. Voila!

I wash mine with baby shampoo, and then lay them on a towel until it dries.

its probably not an allergic reacton. if this happens at least once, you should really consider replacing your brush. i have gotten an eye infection from my brush, and i didnt replace it. a week later it came up again cause i keep putting the infection back in with a “dirty” brush. REPLACE IT!
